Which PoE 2 class is best? We rank all 8 classes, from Mercenary to Druid. Learn strengths, weaknesses, and the best picks for beginners and veterans.

Druid takes the top spot, Ranger is the easiest starter, and Mercenary struggles to find an identity. Full breakdown for 2026 early access.

Path of Exile 2 is still in early access, but it has already received numerous updates that have added more classes. Since launch, two new classes have been added, bringing the total from six to eight. However, not all classes are created equal – some are much better suited for beginners, while others shine only in the hands of experts.

📊 Quick Overview – Class Rankings at a Glance

RankClassBest ForBiggest Weakness
8MercenaryNothing specificLacks identity; bad reload speed
7MonkHigh damage, stunsVery squishy; needs precise dodging
6WitchSummoner playstyleDifficult to master; fragile without minions
5SorceressAoE elemental damageWeak at close range; low mobility
4HuntressSpear combat, bleed buildsStruggles early; low survivability
3WarriorTanky melee, stun abilitiesLower damage output
2RangerBeginner-friendly, mobile, high damageLow health, few AoE options
1DruidShapeshifting, versatility, high damageSlightly harder to learn

“None of the classes are bad, but some are simply better than others at doing similar tasks.”

🔫 8. Mercenary – Crossbow and Grenades

The Mercenary is often described as the “worst part of all the other classes.” It wields a crossbow (similar to the Ranger’s bow) but has a bad reload speed that makes it feel clunky. It has grenades for AoE – but the Sorceress does AoE better. It can be tanky – but the Warrior does that better.

StrengthsWeaknesses
Grenades for AoETerrible reload speed
Can be built tankyNo clear identity
Outclassed in every role

The Mercenary isn’t unplayable, but it’s the least satisfying class. Unless you’re committed to the crossbow fantasy, pick something else.

🥋 7. Monk – Fists of Fury

The Monk is an interesting hybrid, using a staff and elemental-infused fists to deal high damage and stun enemies. Its speed is excellent, and the stun potential is real. The problem? The Monk is extremely squishy.

StrengthsWeaknesses
High damage outputVery low health
Strong stun abilitiesRequires perfect dodging
Fast movementNot forgiving for mistakes

“If you are not good at dodging attacks, you will quickly meet your end.” A high-skill-ceiling class. Great for experienced players who love risk-reward gameplay. Beginners will die constantly.

🧙 6. Witch – The Dark Side of Magic

The Witch relies on summoning undead minions to fight for her. This can be extremely powerful – but it’s also difficult to learn and even harder to master. If your skeletons get wiped, you’ll be destroyed instantly due to your own lack of health.

StrengthsWeaknesses
Powerful summoner buildVery steep learning curve
Minions tank for youFragile without summons
High endgame potentialTime-consuming to optimize

The Witch is a marathon, not a sprint. If you’re willing to learn the summoner mechanics, she’s a beast. If you want a simpler start, look elsewhere.

🔥 5. Sorceress – Elemental Power

The Sorceress offers raw elemental damage with powerful AoE attacks that can easily control the battlefield. She’s one of the best classes for dealing with large groups from a distance. But if enemies get close, she has few escape options and very low health.

StrengthsWeaknesses
Huge AoE damageVery squishy
Great crowd controlPoor close-range options
Easy to understandLess mobile than Ranger

A solid caster pick. She’s nearly as powerful as the Ranger in damage potential but lacks the same maneuverability. Keep your distance.

🏹 4. Huntress – Primal Warrior

The Huntress wields a spear, offering a mix of melee attacks and thrown projectiles. She feels like a hybrid between the Ranger and Warrior, but lacks the survivability of both. The early game is a struggle – she doesn’t truly shine until later, when her ascendancy unlocks.

StrengthsWeaknesses
Good mobilityTerrible early game
Bleed abilitiesLow health for a melee class
Versatile buildsTakes time to come online

A late-bloomer. If you’re patient, the Huntress becomes strong. But expect a rough first few acts.

🛡️ 3. Warrior – Tanky Slams

The Warrior is a beast in combat, utilizing stun abilities to take down enemies quickly. With a shield and mace, you can tank boss hits and dish out decent damage in return. The moveset is easy to learn, and the high health pool is very forgiving.

StrengthsWeaknesses
Very tankyLower damage than other classes
Easy to learnSlower playstyle
Great stun abilities

The best melee class for beginners. You won’t top damage charts, but you’ll survive almost anything. Perfect for learning the game.

🏹 2. Ranger – Highly Mobile and Powerful

The Ranger is what most people want in a class: easy to learn, powerful at a distance, and highly mobile. Your bow keeps enemies far away, so you only need to dodge occasionally. Nearly all abilities are powerful, making it easy to craft a build once you understand the basics.

StrengthsWeaknesses
Beginner-friendlyLow health
High damage outputFew AoE options (but the ones it has are good)
Excellent mobility

“The class, being easy to learn, allows anyone to jump into the game, get used to the class, and then work on making a build for it.”

The best starter class in PoE 2. Simple, strong, and safe. You can’t go wrong with Ranger.

🐻 1. Druid – Animalistic Pain

The Druid is a literal beast on the battlefield, with the ability to transform into a bear, werewolf, or wyvern – and you can switch between forms freely at any time. This gives you a wide range of build options. If shapeshifting isn’t your thing, you can stick to spells and play as a heavy weapon warrior-mage hybrid.

StrengthsWeaknesses
Versatile transformationsSlightly harder to learn than Ranger
High damage output
Multiple playstyles in one class

“Druid is a bit more difficult to learn, but it is only slightly more difficult than the ranger, and once you get it down, you will be tearing each enemy’s face off.”

The best class in PoE 2 right now. It has everything – damage, versatility, and the coolest mechanic in the game (shapeshifting). The learning curve is mild, and the payoff is enormous.

💬 BuyCarry Team’s Take

Path of Exile 2 offers incredible class variety, but not all classes are equally beginner-friendly. Our experience helping clients level and gear characters aligns closely with this ranking.

What we agree with:

  • Druid is the king. The shapeshifting mechanic is powerful and fun. It’s worth the slight learning curve.
  • Ranger is the best starter. Simple, safe, and strong. We recommend it to almost every new player.
  • Warrior is great for tanks. If you hate dying, pick Warrior.
  • Mercenary needs help. It’s not terrible, but every other class does its job better.

What we’d add:

  • The Witch can be frustrating early. We offer summoner coaching and build optimization for players who want to skip the painful learning phase.
  • The Monk is a glass cannon – if you struggle with survivability, we can help you adjust your passive tree and gear.

For our clients:

  • Need help leveling a Druid or Ranger fast? We offer power leveling services.
  • Want to master a complex class like Witch or Monk? Our coaches can guide you.
  • Unsure which class to pick? Contact us for personalized advice.

Final verdict: For new players, pick Ranger or Druid. For veterans, Druid is the overall best, but Monk and Witch offer high-skill rewards. Avoid Mercenary unless you’re committed to making it work.
